We released our second album ‘Staring at the Sound’ in 2012. Ever since, for reasons that we’ve never been able to quite pinpoint, there’s been a feeling in the band that it didn’t quite live up to our expectations. It became a standing joke within the band that one day we would re-record those songs and do them ‘properly’. A couple of them did eventually get the treatment on our almost-live album ‘Live-O-Graphic’, but of course new material is more exciting than rehashing the past…
But then the pandemic arrived, and like so many bands we were unable to get together to work on new material. Partly as a technical experiment – and partly as a way of keeping our creative relationship going – we came up with a way of recording remotely. The obvious song candidates to try out this method of recording were lurking on our unloved second album. We quickly got the hang of it, and it was obvious that we were onto something. Over the course of that difficult year we completed new versions of six of the songs, with no real idea of where we were heading. Were we collecting songs for b-sides and compilations? Somewhere along the line Lee Grimshaw heard them with fresh ears and suggested they deserved a proper release, regardless of whether they were re-recordings. His Spinout Nuggets label would be the ideal vehicle…
So here they are – a selection of songs that deserved better – and eventually got it!
